Cash Asks. Chris Answers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cash brings the curiosity. Here, Chris brings the clarity — on fees, philosophy, taxes, retirement, family dynamics, and the occasional feline water fountain.

"What's with the cat?"

Chris: "When designing this website, I could have gone with stock images of a silver-haired couple on a beach or a sailboat. Instead, let's just say I decided to be unapologetically authentic."

Cash (the rescue cat) works from home, helps out with the blog, and holds the role of Chief Feline Officer. If you want financial advice that doesn't make you want to hiss, this firm may very well be a good fit for you.

Kidding aside, I don't always take myself seriously, but rest assured that I am committed to taking the work I do for you seriously. There's no such thing as a silly question at this firm, I encourage candid conversation without fear of judgment. Personal finance is just that, personal, and you deserve transparent guidance tailored to your unique situation.

Who Might Not Be a Good Fit?

Bronx River Advisory is not for everyone, and that's okay. This firm is probably not the right fit if:

You want to debate Fed policy over a two-hour lunch. I focus on what you can control, not what is being speculated in the media.

You're looking for day-to-day spending and lifestyle coaching. I am a planner, not a money coach. For example, I can help you understand how much money you can afford spend without sacrificing your longer-term goals, but only you can ultimately decide how and what to spend your money on.

You want a hundred-page binder of colored charts. I build clear, actionable plans you will actually use. These are often tailored to the clients needs and personality.

You want steady 7 to 10 percent returns with no volatility, the next Bitcoin, a secret tax shelter, or investment property for passive income. We do evidence-based, tax-aware investing. No promises, no shelters, no speculation.

Common FAQs

Do I have to live in the Bronx River towns to work with you?

Bronx River Advisory is a hyper-local firm focused on working with individuals and families who live in the area including but not limited to the Bronx River towns. I can also work with clients elsewhere by secure video and a digital document portal. During busy periods, scheduling preference may be offered to clients who can meet in person, since that's often more efficient, but the standard of advice is the same either way. During times of high demand, local residents and those who were referred to us may receive prioritized service.

If you don't earn commissions, how do you get paid?

Bronx River Advisory is a 100% fee-only fiduciary firm, the only person who pays us is you. For Land on Your Feet and Foster, you pay a transparent, flat project fee. For Ongoing Partnerships, clients are charged a percentage of the assets the firm manages for them. I never accept kickbacks, referral fees, or product commissions — ever.

Can I just hire you for one hour to ask a few quick questions?

Not quite. I do offer fee-for-service "advice-only" arrangements, and we don't require a large asset minimum, but we don't bill strictly by the hour. "Quick questions" often have complex, structural answers, and sometimes complex questions have quick answers where the time doesn't reflect the value. Giving responsible advice means understanding your context first. That's exactly why I built Land on Your Feet, a simple and cost-effecient engagement, with answers in 1 to 2 visits for a flat fee, and no ticking clock. In fact, these engagements often last several hours as I've learned that the best financial advice is rendered when I've taken the time to get to know the client well.

What if I'm embarrassed by my "financial junk drawer"?

Then you're in exactly the right place. My experience is advising households who work tirelessly, dedicating their life to their families and careers, and financial planning often gets pushed to the side. Almost everyone has a financial junk drawer: old 401(k)s never rolled over, investments they can't quite name, questions they've felt uncomfortable asking. For many people, money was a taboo subject growing up, and those early beliefs follow us into adulthood. If you think everyone walking down Pondfield Road has it more together than you, that's almost certainly a mistaken belief. Personal finance is personal, and Bronx River Advisory is a completely judgment-free zone. An advisor's job isn't to critique your past, it's to organize your present and protect your future.

Do I need to bring a big stack of statements to the first meeting?

Generally, no, though if a pile of paperwork has been weighing on you, you're welcome to bring it. Before our first meeting we'll set you up with a secure digital portal to share what's relevant, so we can spend our time on strategy instead of data entry. Some clients prefer to gather everything together, in person; this can be scheduled during or outside normal business hours, especially for healthcare workers and others who need scheduling flexibility.

Fees, Philosophy & Flexibility

Cash: "What is your investment philosophy?"

Chris: "I believe in building globally diversified, highly liquid, and tax-efficient portfolios. I don't chase the latest media hype, try to time the market, or pick individual hot stocks. Instead, I focus heavily on asset location and identifying a disciplined, long-term exit strategy for when you actually need to use your money. I treat your portfolio like a machine designed to fund your life map."

Cash: "How exactly do you charge for your services?"

Chris: "We are strictly fee-only fiduciaries, paid directly by you and never earning commissions or kickbacks. Total pricing transparency across three tracks:"

  • Land on Your Feet (most popular): $750 – $3,000, designed for projects that can be completed in no more than 30 days. I like to spend a lot of time getting to know my clients, so this offering is priced to build in relationship-building time that I don't believe the client should be charged for.

  • The Foster Engagement: $4,500 — $15,000, typically 1–3 months. A quote within this range reflects the structural clarity I believe we'll achieve and includes defined deliverables. This typically includes a balance sheet, a tax return analysis, and building "what if" scenarios in my financial planning software. I use interactive financial planning software to run a range of simulations to help you make informed financial choices with confidence. Please ask if you would like to see a demonstration.

  • Ongoing Relationship: Continuous investment management paired with ongoing planning. Asset or fee minimums apply depending on complexity. Please note that I generally do not enter into an ongoing relationship until after we've had a chance to get to know each other, i.e., most clients start with a limited engagement.

I encourage clients to start small and address their main point(s) of concern. Most often, clients start with a "Land on Your Feet" or occasionally "The Foster Program" to develop a relationship. Thereafter, an ongoing relationship can be considered for those who desire it, where appropriate.

Cash: "Are you available outside normal business hours?"

Chris: "Frequently, yes — especially for clients in demanding fields like healthcare. We'll periodically propose early morning or weekend meetings when there are limited outside distractions. It's far more important that you're comfortable with the timing than that we stick to rigid clock hours. Financial thoughts come up at all times, and I encourage clients to email me with their thoughts in real time — no matter what day of the week or time day it is.

Advanced Tax & Workplace Planning

Cash: "Traditional pre-tax or Roth 401(k)?"

Chris: "It depends — I don't automatically gravitate toward Roth. If you envision a lower-tax state in retirement, or have flexible assets you can access without triggering taxes, maximizing the current-year deduction via traditional often wins. But under current law, passing a tax-free Roth IRA to adult children — who'd otherwise face the 10-year liquidation rule during peak earning years — can be a massive gift. There's zero one-size-fits-all here."

Cash: "How do you handle equity compensation (RSUs, ISOs, NQSOs)?"

Chris: "My guidance is typically most valuable at the beginning, mapping a long-term vesting and tax strategy, and at the bottleneck, when it's time to diversify a concentrated position. Selling requires selectivity about which lots to sell, and ESPP tax basis needs extra attention. Coordinating with your tax preparer, we audit these transactions so you don't accidentally pay taxes twice on the employee discount."

Cash: "Can you help make our charitable giving more tax-efficient?"

Chris: "For the right families, this is an area where I add real value:"

  • Donor-Advised Funds: contribute appreciated stock, bypass capital gains, take an immediate deduction, grant out over time.

  • Charitable Bunching: combine several years of donations into one tax year to clear the standard deduction hurdle.

  • Qualified Charitable Distributions: for those over 70½, direct IRA distributions to charity, satisfying RMDs while keeping the income off your return.

Cash Flow, Risk & Alternative Assets

Cash: "How much emergency cash should I have?"

Chris: "There's no single formula. I will help you find a personalized figure, often earmarking three to five years of anticipated spending. We'll challenge you to hold it where it earns a competitive, tax-efficient return. I love designing T-Bill ladders: backed by the federal government, and the interest is completely exempt from New York state and local income taxes — unlike bank savings and CDs. I can build these for a transparent, fixed fee."

Cash: "Should I pay off my low-interest mortgage?"

Chris: "Most advisors ignore the emotional value of peace of mind. Unless you get a substantial tax deduction benefit or need the liquidity, we fully support paying down low-interest debt, while making sure the remainder of your portfolio stays optimized to offset that lower expected return."

Cash: "I'm worried we're being too conservative with our investments."

Chris: "Being overly conservative, 'inflation risk', can be just as dangerous as taking too much risk. I can run a completely objective, independent analysis of your current allocation against conventional wisdom and institutional benchmarks, without telling your spouse or current team they're wrong."

Cash: "I want to plan for a realistic worst-case if my spouse's income changes."

Chris: "You're not being negative, you're being pragmatic. I can model a career transition or industry shift, test your liquid runway, and make sure your accumulated wealth is diversified rather than concentrated in company stock, so a disruption becomes a manageable pivot rather than a crisis."

Cash: "We're earning more but not saving as much as we expect. Can you look under the hood?"

Chris: "I do not do rigid, finger-wagging budgeting. High cash flow can mask lifestyle creep, hidden fixed costs, or inefficient withholding. I can take a non-judgmental look under the spending hood, but the steering wheel stays entirely in your hands."

Cash: "Do you help clients with insurance?"

Chris: "I do not, nor have I ever, sold insurance and do not earn commissions from it. I can help determine the coverage your family actually needs and review your existing property and casualty coverage for gaps or redundancies, then connect you with a dedicated insurance professional for underwriting."

Cash: "Do you recommend cryptocurrency?"

Chris: "I generally only address it when a client initiates the conversation, given its volatility and regulatory risk. When I do, we generally use liquid, exchange-traded funds tracking Bitcoin or Ethereum, integrated into your existing brokerage accounts with proper oversight and tax reporting."

Cash: "What about gold and silver?"

Chris: "For your wardrobe, lovely. In a portfolio, I don't see a major role given its volatility and lack of yield, but for clients who want exposure, I do use highly liquid ETFs that track the spot price rather than storing physical bars."

Retirement Logistics & Mental Milestones

Cash: "I feel ready to retire but need real validation."

Chris: "I model thousands of potential market outcomes based on historical data, and I intentionally run highly pessimistic, worst-case scenarios. I build your retirement map defensively so you can step away with confidence, even if a downturn began the week after you retired."

Cash: "Should we move to Florida to save on income taxes?"

Chris: "New York is more accommodating to retirees than the headlines suggest. New York does not tax Social Security income, and offers a retirement income exclusion of up to $20,000 a year for single filers ($40,000 for married couples) on eligible pension or IRA distributions. Run the actual math before you pack, and unless the lifestyle itself is the draw, I'd strongly advise not letting the tax tail wag the dog."

Cash: "When should I take Social Security?"

Chris: "Making a permanent decision based on headline panic is rarely optimal. For couples, it's often a coordination strategy to maximize survivor benefits. It's most impactful for single individuals, whose choice is entirely unhedged, delaying creates a statutory, inflation-adjusted income bump of roughly 8% per year between Full Retirement Age and 70. I stress-test both choices against your health, cash needs, and portfolio. There are also unique scenarios with divorce and disability, which I have some experience advising on. If you have questions about social security, definitely feel free to reach out."

Cash: "Joint and Survivor or Single Life pension payout?"

Chris: "This can be straightforward once you have a realistic view of health and life expectancy. If one spouse has health concerns, the larger Single Life payment may deserve serious consideration, but I look at it through a total-wealth lens. We often model Pension Maximization: taking the higher payout and using part of the extra cash flow to fund a private life insurance policy protecting the surviving spouse tax-free."

Family Dynamics & Multi-Generational Giving

Cash: "Can you help our adult kids starting their first jobs?"

Chris: "This is exactly why I built Land on Your Feet. I demystify new employee benefits — the pre-tax/Roth choice, maximizing the company match, healthcare selections, and an automated savings routine. It gives your adult children the confidence to own their financial future."

Cash: "'Fair' doesn't mean 'equal' among our kids. How do we handle it?"

Chris: "I intentionally built buffer time into Land on Your Feet for exactly this: an unhurried space to understand the family dynamics at play. It can make far more sense to gift specific assets, like appreciated stock, rather than raw cash, which is highly visible and can inadvertently fuel dependency. I can help you ensure that your wealth stays a tool for family unity, not friction."

Cash: "Our adult children are still on our payroll and it's weighing on our cash flow."

Chris: "Perhaps, and likely. I would first model how the support impacts your own financial freedom, look for tax-efficient ways to handle the cash flow, and help you establish clear, sustainable boundaries. Every family is unique, so let's talk."

Cash: "We're helping our daughter buy a house but want to protect our equity."

Chris: "A wise concern to address before contracts are signed. I have experience coordinating directly with trusted real estate or family law attorneys, mapping the financial and tax impacts of an intra-family mortgage, co-ownership titles, or a tracked separate equity paper trail. And if this becomes a point of family tension, you have our full permission to use us as your shield, tell them a formal structure was a requirement of your advisory team."

Cash: "I'm having trouble saying 'no' to a loved one who keeps asking for money."

Chris: "Money requests from family carry immense emotional weight. A huge part of what I do is acting as an analytical shield, modeling exactly how a gift or loan would impact your own security, and giving you objective talking points so you can say no with confidence, clarity, and dignity. In some cases, clients can more than afford to help and want to do so, but they value a partner in helping them keep track of gifts so that they provide equal bequests to other loved ones who may not be actively requesting funds."

Institutional Boundaries & Specialized Interventions

Cash: "Can you set up a trust?"

Chris: "We can't legally draft a trust, we're not attorneys, but we guide you through the strategy behind Revocable Living Trusts, Special Needs Trusts, and Asset Protection Trusts, then introduce you to the right estate planning attorney in our network. Often times, we can help you establish what your goals are for the trust, what assets are eligible to be placed in it, and provide a list of key points to supply to your attorney for a smooth estate planning experience."

Cash: "Will you review my beneficiary elections?"

Chris: "Absolutely. Beneficiary designations bypass probate and override your Will. I will make sure your elections are aligned with your actual wishes, family dynamic, and current tax law. Beneficiary elections are arguably more important than ever since the passing of the SECURE Act in 2018. If you plan to leave assets to someone other than an adult child, or if you have a loved one with special needs, there are serious considerations to factor in when making these elections. There are also family dynamics such as in-laws and second marriages that may warrant special instructions. If this is on your mind, get in touch.

Cash: "Our mother inherited everything and is overwhelmed, but the siblings disagree on next steps."

Chris: "My ability to step in depends on your family's alignment. If you're aligned, I am delighted to help organize her next steps. In active disagreement, the most I can promise is an initial call to brainstorm, and I typically only engage once legal counsel is at the forefront to protect her rights. If you are the person who inherited the money and feel overwhelmed because your children or other heirs have differing personal circumstances, get in touch and let's talk it through.

Cash: "I'm going through a divorce. Can you help?"

Chris: "I operate with strict guardrails and don't advise divorcing couples unless independent legal counsel is actively involved. In conjunction with your attorney, I am delighted to help prepare your Statement of Net Worth or map your current financial picture. If you're newly engaged and thinking ahead, you are free to reach out for a brainstorm discussion."

Cash: "A young person I care about just came into significant money. Will you speak with them?"

Chris: "If they're genuinely open to it, I'm absolutely open to speaking with them. Sudden wealth at a young age is a real psychological disruptor. This initial conversation is about mentorship; it may or may not become a formal engagement, as the decision will rest with the person who has control of the funds."

Cash: "Can I cover the cost of that conversation on their behalf?"

Chris: "Generally yes, routed through strict compliance protocols. Even if you're covering the fee, be mindful that my fiduciary loyalty and confidentiality belong entirely to the client receiving the advice."

Cash: "Can I call on behalf of an aging parent or relative?"

Chris: "Common, and I am equipped for it when the caller is a mature adult stepping in to help. But if you're in your 20s calling to manage your parents' money without having been asked, our candid advice is to focus first on building your own career and wealth."

Cash: "Will you set up accounts for children?"

Chris: "The vast majority of accounts we establish for children are 529 college savings accounts. In specific instances, we'll set up custodial accounts (UTMAs) to mitigate taxes on appreciated stock — only when the added tax-reporting and legal-ownership complexity truly fits. There are also Trump Accounts nowadays, which can make sense on a case-by-case basis."

Cash: "Do you help build rental/investment real estate portfolios?"

Chris: "If that's your core strategy, I am probably not the right fit. I love talking about real estate and am happy to help you think through residential real estate, such as affording a larger home, or downsizing, but I am not in the real estate industry and generally don't condone the amateur landlord business.

Cash: "Can you help with Qualified Small Business Stock (QSBS) planning?"

Chris: "I have limited experience here, but a strong network of peers who specialize in Section 1202 QSBS exclusions. Schedule a call and we'll see if there's a straightforward way to add value, and introduce you to a trusted expert if not."

The Quirks of Human Nature

Cash: "What's the most unusual thing you've helped a client with?"

Chris: "Money makes people funny, based on generalized, composite experiences from our practice, some favorites:"

  • The Wedding Gift Dilemma: finding the exact dollar amount that doesn't seem cheap or boastful.

  • The 'Ridiculous' Dream Purchase: giving full mathematical permission for a purchase friends thought was crazy, but was deeply meaningful.

"At the end of the day, I love what we do. My goal is always the same: to help you make informed choices with absolute dignity and zero judgment."
